How to Choose a Reputable Raleigh Moving Company

Ready to make a move but don’t know which company to choose to get you there? It all starts with research, then some more research, and a little more. Settling on a residential or commercial mover in Raleigh and surrounding areas may sound daunting at first glance, but if you take the time to do your homework, you will be left with the best company for the job.

Here are some tips on choosing the right Raleigh moving company for you.

1.    Check on Experience and Years in Business

The first thing you should do is find out how long the company has been in business. If they just set up shop, they may not have the experience you’re looking for. It’s also hard to research them properly because there will be limited information out there. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they are disreputable. You will just have to dig a little bit more. In fact, newer companies can bring a fresh perspective and optimism to the job.

But in general, you’ll want to go with an established company that has at least a few years of experience under their belts. This shows that they have the reputation and ability to make it in this business. See how long they’ve been in the same location, too. You want to look for an actual address, not just a PO box.

Make sure they have experience planning and executing your specific type of move, whether that’s local, long-distance or commercial.

2.     Check on License and Insurance

You don’t want to hire a company that can’t produce proof of these two things. If they are not licensed and insured, this results in a risk to you, your property and your belongings. Be direct and ask them to show you proof. If they don’t, go with someone else, as they may have something to hide. Many movers list their licensing info on their company website, which should specify the Department of Transportation (DOT) licensing and insurance information.

3.     Ask About Services

Whether you need a simple, standard, local move or a more complex office relocation, always ask about the services they offer and any specialty services they may offer as well. It’s important to understand the scope and span of work that your mover is willing to do. Most will handle standard house-to-house moves within a specific area. But if your move involves more than that – such as valuable items, special requests or awkward item such as pianos — ask about these capabilities beforehand. You will want to know sooner rather than later if they indeed have the manpower, trucks and special equipment to manage your requests.

Specialty items include hot tubs, gun safes, pianos, pool tables, large sectionals, etc. Specialty services include storage, estate cleanouts, senior moves, packing, assembly and disassembly, and loading and unloading.

4.     Read Online Reviews

Don’t skip this step. This is where you’ll find the true gems you’re looking for. Of course, always take online reviews with a grain of salt. You’re looking for mostly positive reviews, but don’t worry if you see an occasional negative review. It’s more important to see how the company responds to those negative reviews, offering to make their experience better. Look for a rating of at least four stars, backed by certified professional movers who are members of reputable moving associations.

At the same time, ask around with friends and family to see who they’ve used in the past for moves of all kinds. Would they recommend the moving company? Why or why not? What did they like about their mover?

5.     Check the Mover’s Service Area

Check that the mover offers services in your city before you schedule service. Their website should have a Google map that shows all areas served, or at least a listing of communities served on one of the pages. If you don’t see your community listed, just call. They may still offer services there.

6.     Ask What Moving Equipment They Have

There is usually a big variety in the services offered by any given mover. National franchises tend to have big truck fleets and plenty of resources and heavy equipment. Small independent, local owners may just have two or three trucks with limited manpower and equipment. They both have their benefits…you just have to make sure your expectations and their abilities match up properly.

7.     Know the Red Flags

When choosing movers, be on the lookout for the following signs:

  • Low-ball bids. Any estimate that is significantly lower than the rest could be suspect. Those low-ball offers are designed to wow you into signing with them, and they certainly do sound appealing, especially when you realize how expensive it is to move. But remember: you get what you pay for and if it seems too good to be true, well, you know how it goes. It could be a scam, or it could mean that you’ll see surprise fees tacked onto the final bill. Movers have to make money somehow!
  • Large deposits. Any movers worth their salt won’t charge a deposit of more than 20% down. In fact, the best companies won’t ask for anything upfront until the move Is complete. If you do give a large deposit, such as a complicated, long-distance relocation, use a credit card to protect yourself – never pay cash. If something goes south, you can always dispute the charge with the credit card company later.
  • Rented moving vans. Some smaller companies just starting out may need to rent moving vans at first to build their business. Rented vans are also a common occurrence for very small moves, such as a couple pieces of furniture. But for whole-house moves or office moves, you want to see a moving company show up with all their own equipment and trucks.
  • Unprofessionalism. Be on the lookout for unacceptable behavior such as showing up late for the in-person estimate, unprofessional or unfriendly demeanor, condescending tones or actions, etc. Look for courteous professionals who respect your time and property, and who show up on time.
